Nestlé celebrates Child Protection Week with nutrition programme

Nestlé South Africa welcomed hundreds of children to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden on Wednesday, 30 May, to take part in their nutrition and physical education programme.

The event took place during the nationwide celebration of Child Protection Week (27 May–3 June), and formed part of the Nestlé for Healthier Kids initiative led by the South African branch of the company.

The children were able to take part in a ‘cookathon’ as well as a sandwich preparation exercise led by a trained chef, all while taking part in various physical activities, including Zumba dancing, boot-camp exercises, and hula hoop and skipping rope challenges.

The Nestlé for Healthier Kids initiative was formally launched on 15 May, and aims to help about 50 million children globally to lead healthier lives.

Since its foundation, Nestlé has been committed to helping parents and caregivers provide the right nutrition for their children.

Nestlé has also undertaken a partnership agreement with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and is committed to supporting the DBE’s efforts to promote health and well-being in its Life Skills Curriculum, which focuses on healthy nutrition and quality physical education.

In 2015, Nestlé and the DBE commissioned a nutrition education study done by the Vaal University of Technology to measure the impact of this initiative.

Through this initiative, Nestlé South Africa aims to reach over 50 per cent of the country’s primary school learners by 2020.

The DBE, through its National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP), also aims to enhance the learning capacity of learners by providing more healthy meals at schools.

“We have partnered with various stakeholders, including the DBE, to help in successfully raising awareness and enhancing nutrition and physical education programmes to promote the health and well-being of children,” said Nestlé South Africa’s spokesperson, Ravi Pillay.
