Yoga in the most tranquil setting

Virgin Active hosted a large number of people at the first instalment of their Silent Yoga in the Garden event at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden.

Because yoga is still a very popular way to stay active, Virgin Active thought it a good idea to try out silent yoga at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden as it serves as an ideal setting for showcasing this form of exercise.

The participants in the event wore headphones linked to the instructor’s microphone.

The instructors then relay their instructions with calm, soothing music being played in the background. The concept aims to eliminate ambient background noise to draw attention away from any possible distractions.

“Virgin Active is all about making exercise irresistible. We realise that exercising in a health club is not for everyone, and therefore with our silent yoga event we not only offered people an opportunity to exercise – we also allowed them to train in the beautiful setting of the botanical garden,” said Virgin Active’s Adele de Waal.

Every year the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) publishes the top 40 exercise trends for the year, and this year yoga ranked seventh.

“At this time of the year, it is good to reboot and refocus the mind and body,” Adele said.

This was exactly the aim of the instructors, Geraldine Anderson, Maro Christofides, and Verna Young, who coordinated the morning’s events.

“Apart from improving your mental clarity and assisting with stress management, yoga is also great for improving flexibility and balance, and depending on which style of yoga you choose, it can help build muscle strength and endurance,” Adele concluded.
