Security expert provides winter anti-crime tips

EC Security’s dedicated reaction manager Norman Mphilo provided residents and motorists with preventative tips that can save them during an act of crime.

As the winter season ushers in short days and long nights, it is no secret that criminals use this season to do most of their dirty business.

EC Security’s dedicated reaction manager, Norman Mphilo, provided residents and motorists with some preventative tips that can save them during an act of crime.

Mphilo told Northsider that criminals take advantage of the long dark nights to harm residents. He said some of the crime can be avoided if residents are vigilant and frequently report suspicious activities to the crime Whatsapp groups.

“Homeowners are always targeted by criminals when they leave their properties. So it is important as a homeowner to look through the window and observe your surroundings before walking to the garage and driving off,” he cautioned.

If there’s a suspicious person or vehicle outside the property, Mphilo advised the homeowner to call any security company for an escort. “Not all security companies do this for free, but it is important to acquire help,” he explained.

Mphilo added that motorists need to observe their surroundings when travelling back home. “Check who’s following you,” he said, “and if you are being followed, make sure you pass your house and use a different route to get home,” he guided.

He also encouraged motorists to keep their windows closed at intersections and to avoid falling prey to remote jammers at shopping centres. “If you’re not willing to take a pamphlet at an intersection, keep your windows closed or just a little open if you need air. Drivers with remote locking systems also need to double check their cars to prevent the car being remotely jammed,” he concluded.
