Is this your vision of a world class city?

John West from Weltevreden Park writes:

Open letter to the executive mayor of Johannesburg, concillor Herman Mashaba:

For years now, raw sewage has been flowing in the streets of Weltevreden Park – and through my garden – whenever we have heavy rain. I have brought this to the municipality’s attention on numerous occasions, asking for someone to come out and assess (and fix) the root of the problem, i.e., why our drains keep getting blocked and overflow.

I have escalated the problem to my ward councillor and to the executive office manager in the private office of the Speaker. I have complained about nothing being done by any of the municipal employees I have contacted. I have complained about the fact that they blatantly ignore all attempts at following up on this matter (especially our ward councillor).

Yet still – nothing has been done.

As I type, raw sewage still lies in our local park, 100 metres away from a children’s play park. And nobody in the municipal structure seems to care.

I ask you, seriously – is this your vision of a world class African city?
