Wrestling tournament in honour of legend

Danie Voges tournament around the corner

The Danie van Zyl Wrestling Club will soon be hosting its annual Danie Voges open tournament, and is inviting all wrestling clubs to attend.

The tournament will take place on 26 May at the Danie van Zyl Recreational Hall, on the corner of Plantation Road and Rex Street, Montclare. The tournament will start at 8am, and all styles and ages are welcome. Entries cost R100 per person.

Danie and his brother Kobus, also known as Ananzi, decided to host this tournament every year, in honour of their mentor and uncle, the legendary Danie Voges. “He was one of the best amateur and professional wrestlers in south Africa, but in 2009 he suffered a massive stroke, and contracted meningitis, which left him with permanent brain damage. He was also recently diagnosed with Parkinsons’ Disease,” said Danie.

This tournament is one of the club’s big fundraising events and Danie Erasmus, the club’s coach, explained, “We are a non-profit organisation, and, because we do not charge our students a monthly fee, we use the money raised at this tournament to help pay for our wrestlers’ entry fees to tournaments. We also give a percentage of the day’s profits to Danie Voges, to help with his medical costs.”

He urged wrestling clubs to enter for the tournament, and said, “The more entries we receive, the greater the success of the tournament will be. It will also help us financially, and ensure we can continue giving our wrestlers the best training and opportunities.”
