No man is an island

John Baisley of Welties writes:

Over the past weeks I have read the comments of residents in Sector 2, along with press articles about both “loving Weltevreden Park “and “Honeydew losing crime battle”.

I have been involved in the fight against crime in the Honeydew policing area for some 19 years and have lived in Welties for about the same amount of time. I have been both CPF and sector chairperson in my area for many years.

I love Welties and I believe that we residents can make a huge difference in the fight against crime.

The fight against crime, and it is ongoing, as crime comes in many forms, will take the police, security companies and you and me together to make a difference. No one of these entities can do it on its own, and neither can two.

I would like to urge you to please support those in your area attempting to make your neighbourhood safe. They cannot do it on their own and need your support. Many have engaged with security companies as dedicated service providers and this is one way to make your area safe. Visible policing works, as does having marked cars actively patrolling.

WhatsApp groups have definitely helped in the fight against crime and brought communities closer together.

There is so much more, but maybe for another time.

We do not have to lose hope when it comes to our safety. All it takes is to get involved in your neighbourhood. An association is a powerful thing.

Two sayings come to mind. “No man is an island” and “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.

I challenge you to join your RA and to make a difference.

Please contact me at chairman@ckn.org.za if you are in need.

Stay safe.
