Poorte 1st XV oust Pirates to move into second place

Roodepoort Rugby Club's first team was the only side able to register a win in a tough day out at the Bill Jardine Stadium.

In what was a day of clashes between two top clubs in this year’s Pirates Grand Challenge Trophy, Pirates claimed the major victory of the day as they won five of the six matches they played.

The day kicked off with the third and U/21 teams doing battle in their respective games. It was unfortunately not a great start to the day for Poorte as both sides lost their matches by a margin of more than 20 points.

The next round of matches saw Poorte’s first women’s match of the season take place, while the second teams also locked horns.

The women were unable to register a point, losing their game to Pirates, while the second team couldn’t find their feet and subsequently lost their match as well.

The third set of games yielded the best results for Poorte as the first teams and U/19 sides played their respective games.

The U/19s fought long and hard in their match and only went down by a margin of four points.

By contrast, the Poorte 1st XV continued their fine form as they defeated their opponents to move into second place on the standings behind the University of Johannesburg, on points difference alone.

Poorte will face Wits University in their next round of matches at home at Ruimsig Stadium this weekend.

Here are the results from the weekend’s matches at Pirates:

• Women: Roodepoort 0–34 Pirates

• U/19: Roodepoort 15–19 Pirates

• U/21: Roodepoort 10–36 Pirates

• Thirds: Roodepoort 7–28 Pirates

• Seconds: Roodepoort 10–47 Pirates

• Firsts: Roodepoort 46–10 Pirates
