Florida’s Sector 2 CPF explains Sunday night’s drama

Residents damaged another sub-station.

Florida’s Sector 2 CPF has released a statement explaining what took place near the Jerusalem informal settlement on 13 May.

They also expressed their thanks to the emergency agencies for their prompt and professional action.

“The Florida CPF would like to thank the Florida Police as well as the Metro Public Order Policing (POP) Unit for the prompt and efficient manner in which the protests that erupted on 13 May, were dealt with.

“The POP brought in its Nyala and assisted with dispersing the rioters on Albertina Sisulu Road between Westlake Avenue and Potgieter Street,” the statement read.

It went on to explain that the reason for the protest was that residents of the Jersualem informal settlement, previously the grounds of the Roodepoort Rugby Club, want electricity, which they had in the past. However, they were illegally connected and overloaded their mini-sub, and it blew. They then tried to illegally connect to the mini-sub on Eider Street and blew that mini-sub too. Fortunately there were no injuries. City Power was on the scene working to restore power to those affected in Florida Lake.

“We extend our gratitude to our CPF members who stood in the front lines while awaiting the arrival of the police and Metro Police. We often forget to thank these selfless individuals who do so much and ask for nothing in return. They risk their lives daily. We salute you,” the statement concluded.
