Horison women’s centre continues to fight against abuse
Free counselling and weekly support groups offerred
The Champions 4 Change women’s centre is continuing its fight against women and child abuse through various support programmes.
The centre works on referrals from the police or the Clinical Forensic Medical Unit based at Discoverer’s Hospital, offering counselling services to survivors of abuse and rape.

Gwendoline Pretorius, the Managing Director of the centre, said, “We would like the community to know that these services are offered free of charge, and we are in need of volunteers.”
She added that volunteers required police clearance before they can help at the centre.
Counselling is offered to victims, who can also attend weekly support groups that cover topics such as bereavement, domestic violence, rape, trauma and self defence.
The centre also offers healing therapy through arts and crafts, knitting, sewing, pottery and gardening. “Besides these services, life-skills training is also offered to the women, to assist them to become more independent and liberated from their lives of violence,” said Gwendoline.
