Hirsch’s hosts ‘mood and food’ workshop

Claire Buck recently held a health and wellness workshop at Hirsch’s Strubens Valley to educate the attendees on how food can affect your mood.

The workshop was held on Wednesday, 18 April, and forms part of Hirsch’s Strubens Valley’s monthly health and wellness workshop programme aimed at assisting the community to live a healthier lifestyle.

“Claire emphasised that by eating a healthy and balanced diet you can be certain to absorb the correct nutrients for a healthy body and mind,” said Hirsch’s public relations officer, Dorette Nel.

One of the points that Claire explored on the day was how a low-GI diet can regulate blood sugar, as sugar can affect the body in so many negative ways.

Claire also explained how food allergies and intolerances can cause hormonal imbalances and reduce the absorption of vitamins and minerals.

“The poor absorption of vitamins and minerals can possibly lead to deficiencies in what your body needs. This, in turn can lead to mood swings and depression,” Claire said.

One of the tips that Claire provided was that herbs are a great way to reduce stress, so drinking herbal teas or herb-infused water is generally a good idea.

Another point that Claire brought up was that eating food that helps reduce stress levels helps stabilise blood sugar, which in turn stabilises one’s mood.

Claire concluded by saying, “All is not lost, however; a sweet treat of organic chocolate is filled with antioxidants and flavonoids, which help reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. Cocoa powder is high in protein and is also known to increase levels of serotonin, which is the happy hormone.”

A lucky draw, which was won by Cynthia Lang, was also part of the workshop.
