Update on condition of woman who was shot during robbery

Both her temperature and the swelling on her brain have been fluctuating

Riette van der Merwe, the woman who was shot twice in the head at point blank range during an armed robbery in Newlands on Monday, 23 April, is still in an induced coma in the Milpark Hospital.

Her sister, Susan Button, wrote on a Whatsapp support group on Friday, 27 April, that both her temperature and the swelling on her brain have been fluctuating, but that she was otherwise stable. Doctors are waiting for the swelling to subside considerably before they can perform surgery to remove the bullets, one lodged in her skull and the other in her spine.

Friends and family have been posting prayers and words of encouragement on the Whatsapp group on a daily basis.

The robbery took place at Manny’s Meat Market, where Van der Merwe is employed. The six suspects fled without taking any money.
