Ruiter wrestlers’ hard work paid off

15 medals for wrestlers

Wrestlers from the Ruiter Wrestling Club in Witpoortjie recently participated in the South African President’s and Masters’ championships.

The wrestlers participated in three age categories, namely Masters, President’s (U/15 to U/20) as well as Schools President’s (U/9 to U/13). They also participated in both the free- and Greco-Roman styles.

Their coach, Dean van Zyl, was very proud to announce that they brought home 15 medals – six gold, five silver and four bronze.

“I am very proud of the wrestlers as they have been working very hard. They are definitely a very committed bunch, and when they compete, it shows,” he said proudly.

He added that the wrestlers from St Laurence’s Children’s Haven who also won a number of medals, deserve a special mention, and explained, “Their achievements are very special, as they managed to excel even though they do not have the extra support and motivation the other wrestlers receive at home. We are extremely proud of them.”

The wrestlers’ achievements are as follows:

• Jessica Eagar, Justin van Zyl, Dean van Zyl and Johan Ochse all won a gold medal each, while Riehan Botha won two.

• Rudi Seodinyane, Michaella Delport, and Dominick Haasbroek all won a silver medal each, and Machiel Grobler won two.

• Regan Seodinyane, Josh Ginsberg, Neo Ginsberg and Christo Kruger each won a bronze medal.

The next big competition will be the South African Senior and Cadet Championships, and Dean believes that his wrestlers will once again bring back quite a few medals. “I believe we will do very well, especially if our preparation continues as it is at present,” he said. The Ruiter Wrestling Club trains in Hoërskool Bastion’s hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8.30pm.
