The outcome of the storm investigation

The violent storm caused extensive damage to properties in the southern and western low-cost housing developments and informal settlements of Johannesburg.

In a recent media release, the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, councillor Herman Mashaba stated that he is in the process of meeting with communities which were affected by severe storms within Johannesburg.

Mashaba said, “Following a two-month investigation, the City released findings proving that poorly constructed homes were the worst affected by a violent storm which struck the City in December last year. This violent storm caused extensive damage to properties in the southern and western low-cost housing developments and informal settlements of Johannesburg.

“During the release of our investigation’s findings, I also committed to, once again, visiting those communities worst affected by the storm and providing them with feedback on the details of the investigation.

These meetings will go a long way to ensuring that families have a clear understanding of the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

He went on to say that his office has begun the work of setting up these community meetings, which will begin in early April, while taking into consideration that there will be a need for him to attend a number of pressing Council sittings as well as accommodating those leaving the City over the coming short holiday period.

He concluded by saying, “I would like to thank our residents for their support and continued patience in addressing this matter.”
