Warning: heavy rain and flooding expected

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Service spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, has warned residents of heavy rainfalls and possible flooding in the next two days.

He said the EMS team will remain on high alert to make sure that they are able to effectively respond to any emergency which might occur throughout the city. He added that the main focus will on the 189 informal settlements, which are most vulnerable to flooding incidents.

“The City of Johannesburg Disaster Management Centre will be fully operational from Thursday through to the weekend, and Disaster Management Monitoring Teams have been dispatched to all seven regions of the City to monitor any eventuality and also to facilitate any evacuation procedures whenever there might be a need to do so since there is a possibility of localised flooding,” he said.
He also urged motorists to refrain from attempting to cross flooded bridges and roads, and use alternative routes instead. He further cautioned residents to “… extend their safe following distance to prevent accidents on wet and slippery roads, and urged young children to stay away from drainage systems and rivers to avoid drowning incidents”.
