Update: ‘We have complied with SPCA warning’
Roodepoort SPCA confirms all items were complied with
After a complaint from a community member, the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm has been in the spotlight once again.
The complaint pertained to the general neglect at the establishment and after it had been reported to the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, an inspector was sent out, and a warning was issued.

The establishment had 24 hours to correct everything that was listed in the warning. According to Faye Potgieter from West Rand Pet and Bird Farm, they have already complied. “I can confirm that the SPCA did an inspection at our premises following a complaint from a member of the public.
A list of things to be sorted out was issued to us. After the 24 hours we were allowed to comply, the inspector visited us again, and confirmed that the SPCA was happy,” she said.
She added that none of the items listed on the warning pertained to bunnies with sore eyes, and the only issue relating to birds was one whose beak needed to be filed, which was done by a veterinarian.
Mandy Cattanach, the manager at the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, confirmed that the establishment did comply and rectified everything that was mentioned in the warning. “I just do not understand why it takes the SPCA to issue them a warning, before they will clean up. Their standards at the premises are just that – standard. We have issued warning upon warning to them, and I think in all the years we have been dealing with them, there were only two occasions when I did not have to issue a warning after an inspection,” she said.
The members of Ban Animal Trading (Bat) will have a peaceful gathering outside the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm on 24 March from 10am to 12 noon, and anyone is welcome to join them. They will provide flyers and posters on the day.
