National No Selfie Day

Stop participating in this narcissistic act on #NationalNoSelfieDay

16 March is National No Selfie Day, a day dedicated to breaking free of the addiction of taking constant selfies.

There is an epidemic in today’s world, a growing plague of epic proportions that affects every form of social media. New devices have been made to assist in the acceleration of its growth – which can be seen every time social media sites are accessed. The plague is called selfies – and they are by far the worst thing to come out of the accessibility of self-photography.

On National No Selfie Day, you can use the opportunity to stop – even if it is for only one day – participating in this narcissistic and – as it turns out – psychologically damaging behaviour.

This day was established to help cast light on just how much this act has become part of our culture. The average girl spends one hour and 24 minutes each week trying to capture the perfect selfie in an attempt to satisfy the deep-seated need to be noticed and feel that she’s special.

We are constantly preparing the perfect picture that will receive the most likes and comments in an attempt to bolster our self-esteem. It seems harmless on the surface, until you consider how it further separates us from one another and how damaging it can be if a posted selfie is not noticed.

After all, if notice is equal to appreciation and self-worth, what does that say about not being noticed?

The plague of taking selfies further builds on what society perceives as being beautiful. The taking of a selfie usually goes hand in hand with the use of photo editing software, in an attempt to enhance a selfie so much so that you appear unrealistically beautiful.

This must be such a relief for the fashion industry, as they no longer have to promote unrealistic ideals of beauty – we have taken the initiative and started doing it ourselves.

To celebrate today is easy – all you have to do is NOT participate in taking selfies! Set yourself free from being judged through the camera’s eye and approval of your peers through meaningless likes and comments on social media by simply choosing not to participate.

The whole concept of National No Selfie Day is to start living your life and being in the moment, rather than trying to capture and edit it.

Use #NationalNoSelfieDay on social media.
