Wilro Cycle challenge a month away
Cyclists now have seeding opportunities
The 19th edition of the popular Wilro Cycle Challenge will be taking place on 15 April, and will be offering cyclists seeding opportunities as well.
“This year, cyclists will be able to gain seeding points for participation in the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge as well as next year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour, ensuring a better starting position,” said Rob Stevens from Westgate Wheelers Cycling Club, one of the race’s organisers.
The race will be taking place at Tarlton International Raceway. Sydney van Heerden, from the Lions Club Wilro Park, who is the convener of the race, said, “The race will start and finish at Tarlton, which is one of the better venues, because of the one kilometre strip that enables cyclists to really race to the finish line. It is also a very safe and secure venue, with ample parking, security guards, marshalls on the route as well as more than enough emergency service personnel.”
The first Cycle challenge took place in 1999 at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium and had 100 cyclists competing over a distance of either 65km or 30km. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the race was held at Maropeng and in 2009 the move was made to the current venue.
Rob said, “We have had quite a few well-known cyclists not only participating in the race, but winning it too, including Robbie Hunter (2006), Nolan Hoffman (2015), Kent Main (2014), Jackie van Eeden (2015), Carla Oberholzer (2016), Ronél van Wyk (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005), Shaun Mackenzie (who won the veterans’ age 30 to 39 category in 2008), and Andrew Mclean (who won the veterans’ age 40 to 49 category, also in 2008).”
Cyclists from ages six to 96 and all fitness levels are welcome to participate, and they will have two distances to choose from – 114km and 41km. “All entrants will receive a goodie bag and a medal will be given to all finishers. We will also have quadriplegic cyclists participating on the day,” Sydney said.
Entries for the race can be done on cycle Events’ web page (www.cycleevents.co.za), and Sydney said, “We want to encourage cyclists to enter the race, it is for a good cause. It is one of our major fundraising events, and all proceeds will be used to address needs in our community.”
