Collecting money at the traffic lights

Concerned citizen from Roodepoort writes:

I was left speechless today when I came across a group of Laerskool Florida learners raising funds by collecting money at the traffic lights on Hendrik Potgieter Road.

What disturbed me was the fact that the teachers were standing on the pavement having a conversation, leaving the children unsupervised on a main road.

I tried to contact a representative from the school to advise them of this, hoping it was some kind of mistake, but the only mobile number on the website belonged to a retired principal. He, however, advised me that the information would be passed on.

I could not stop thinking that the the parents of these children must be aware of this and must have signed an indemnity form of some sort? Surely they would have objected or offered their services to raise funds the “old school” way by selling wors rolls at a school function etc?

Unfortunately, we are teaching the leaders of tomorrow that it is okay to stand at a traffic light and ask for money, instead of using this opportunity to the bring the community together at a fundraising function hosted at the school.
