10 March is National Mario Day. This day is celebrated annually and honours Mario – the character from the popular Nintendo game.
Today is a video gamer holiday which was started by video gamers. The date – Mar 10 – was chosen because if abbreviated it looks just like the name Mario. However, the names of the original creators of the day could not be found.
Some interesting Mario facts:
– The Italian plumber – Mario – first appeared in the game Donkey Kong in 1981.
– Mario got his own game in 1983, where he appeared together with his brother, Luigi.
– Mario is known as the most famous video game character that was ever created.
– More than 210 million copies of the Mario game series have been sold – worldwide.
Some other famous Marios you might recognise, include Mario Andretti (race car driver), Mario Batali (chef) and Mario Lopez (actor).
To celebrate today have some fun with your friends and play video games. You can also do something special for, and/ or with all people named Mario!
