Wrestlers toss each other for championship
A variety of age groups packed the hall to witness and support their favourite local wrestlers compete in different matches.
Bodies tossed to the floor, blood and a jubilant atmosphere best describe the African Punishment Wrestling Association’s (APWA) ladder match held at the Danie van Zyl Recreational Centre in Newlands on 25 February.
An audience made up of people of all ages packed the hall to witness and support their favourite local wrestlers as they competed in different matches.

The enthralling evening included two other matches before the main event (the ladder match). The first event was a singles match which ended as a tag-team fight when Ultimate Nathan came out to rescue his friend Alessandro, who was in a match with Dragon Boy. Matthew the Hammer then teamed up with Dragon Boy, but they lost the match after the referee was knocked out. The referee’s unconscious state gave Ultimate Nathan the opportunity to destroy his opponents and clinch a victory.

The second match was a fatal four-way between four superstars, Maverick, Autumn, TK and Ashton Hey, who locked horns to gain the title of Best Rookie of 2018. Tough athletes TK and Maverick initially stole the show as they used their strength to take each other down. However, their fight was interrupted by Autumn who flew into both athletes, taking them out of the ring. Ashton then rushed into the ring to punish Autumn and gained the victory. His celebration was short-lived as he was interrupted by Blizzard who offered him a drink and then attacked the rookie to take over the spotlight.

The third and final event was a ladder match for the APWA championship. In this match, a champion’s belt was suspended from the ceiling, and whoever managed to get it down was declared the winner. A group of seven wrestlers fought simultaneously in a brutal and bloody match for this honour.
The group consisted of Zizou, Loudmouth, Blizzard, Ultimate Nathan, El Mascarado, Matthew the Hammer and Ananzi, a respected and experienced wrestler. The wrestlers gave their all in their efforts to climb the ladder and get their hands on the APWA title. A bloodied Ananzi climbed the ladder twice but was interrupted each time by the high-flyer El Mascarado. During Ananzi’s second attempt, El Mascarado punched Ananzi to the floor and then wasted no time scaling the ladder and grabbing the belt, thus walking away as the new champion.

The wrestlers showed great sportsmanship as they all shook hands and celebrated with the winner after the exhilarating four-hour event.
