Father’s postnatal depression

Fathers can also fall victim to postnatal depression, even though men often pretend it not to be the case.

The birth of a child can be emotionally challenging not only for mothers, but for fathers as well. Fathers can also fall victim to postnatal depression, even though men often pretend it not to be the case.

According BabyCentre, an online source of pregnancy and parenting advice, the extent of postnatal depression (PND) varies during the first year of parenthood. Dads appear to be most vulnerable to depression when their baby is between three months and six months old. Age plays a part too. Being a dad in your 20s can increase the risk, as young dads are more likely to become depressed.

Here are just some of the symptoms you may experience if you’re suffering from depression:

• Socialising less and avoiding friends

• Change in appetite (usually eating less)

• Unexplained aches and pains

• Feeling anxious or worried

• Not doing well at work

• Lack of interest in sex

• Lack of energy

• Sleep problems

Should you your or your partner show these symptoms, it is best to find help at the following places:
