Trial of man who allegedly shot his father seven times starts soon

Defence's application for non-custodial sentence rejected.

The murder trial of Amele Johannes AJ Lubbe will finally resume in the Roodepoort Regional Court on 15 March.

Lubbe stands accused of having shot and killed his father, Andries Johannes Lubbe, at their home on Equestrian Road in Poortview on 17 September 2016. It is alleged that during the morning of the day in question while Lubbe Snr and his wife, Melanie were involved in a verbal and physical altercation, Lubbe Sr came out of his room and fired seven shots, hitting his father in the face, arm, forearm and chest.

Against this backdrop the State will pursue a conviction of premeditated murder.

The reason it took so long for the trial to start is that the Defence team had applied for a non-custodial sentence (instead of a prison sentence), which the Directorate of Public Prosecutions rejected.
