Golden Reef hosts interclub timetrial challenge

Club hosted a successful challenge

The Golden Reef Running Club hosted the monthly West Rand Interclub time trials recently.

The monthly event is attended by athletes from the host club as well as Roodepoort Athletics Club, Florida Running Club, Panorama Running Club, Krugersdorp Road Runners and Khosa Road Runners.

“For the past 10 years, the time trials have been a challenge between the clubs with a trophy up for grabs. But, since the sponsor withdrew two years ago, it has become more of a social event used as a team-building opportunity. Every month, one of the other clubs will host the event, and we try to complete it before the annual Comrades Marathon,” said Cassie Carstens, the club’s chairman.

Back: Janéll de Wet (Roodepoort), Leon Rossouw (Krugersdorp) and André Adkins (Krugersdorp). Front: Roenlle Heyns (Roodepoort) and Melanie de Beer (Roodepoort).

Because the time trial took place during February, it was decided to bring in something extra, and all athletes were asked to embrace the Valentine theme. “We asked all participating runners to wear red, and everyone that finished the 5km course received a free red shooter. We also had boerewors rolls and red velvet cupcakes for sale,” Cassie said.

There was a lucky prize for a runner from each club, and the big prize for the evening was a pair of running shoes sponsored by Randburg Runner.

Cassie explained that the Golden Reef Running Club hosts their own time trials every Thursday night at the club from 6pm, and they also have a social run every Sunday morning, which starts at 7am. “The runs start at different venues every Sunday, and, after completing the run, all of us have a delicious breakfast together,” he said.

He described the club as a small, family-orientated club, that caters for both runners and walkers and he said, “Our oldest member is 83 years old and our youngest one, two-and-a-half. We also support the Roodepoort Parkrun, and have members that have completed more than 200 runs. We have cyclists, swimmers and also have an association with the Florida Hiking and Adventure Club, proving that we offer something for everyone.”
