It’s time to showcase your talents

Total prize money of R100 000 will be won at the 15th National Young Performer Awards Competition to be hosted at the Roodepoort Theatre

The Roodepoort Theatre will be hosting the National Eisteddfod. Entries are now open for the 15th Young Performer Awards Competition, with total prize money of R100 000. This competition is open to all top achievers in the National Eisteddfod 2017, as well as top achievers in all other local Eisteddfods. This announcement was made by Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development.

Sifumba stated that the event is aimed at developing young performers through the adjudication and mentoring that involves both teacher and parent guiding participants to process achievements and challenges within a safe, child-friendly environment.

The City of Joburg encourages its residents to express themselves through the theatre and other forms of performing art. The programmes are run in City facilities such as the theatres, museums, etc. According to Sifumba, the qualifiers for the National Eisteddfod are selected from the Regional Eisteddfod events, which are presented among the rural and urban communities in various provinces in South Africa and across our borders.

This is to ensure fair access to all the people of South Africa, especially those living in under-serviced areas. Participants that receive diplomas for their performances (excluding unprepared work) are then eligible to be invited to participate in the National Eisteddfod.

The National Eisteddfod consists of adjudicated sessions where young and old performers can participate in speech and drama, dance, classical and crossover music (vocal and instrumental), contemporary music (vocal and instrumental), and fine art, and is open to learners with different abilities

“The City of Joburg is committed to celebrating and showcasing talent to its residents through the arts. Theatre has the ability to attract both young and old people to express their craft and generate income for themselves, and to also become household brands not only in South Africa, but in other countries,” said Sifumba.
