Witpoortjie writer wants to inspire with poetry

'It is my dream to one day see my book in libraries and book stores'

“My biggest desire is to see my book in libraries and book shops, so that everyone can have access to it,” said Sello Huma.

The 32-year-old Witpoortjie resident has been writing since he was 12 years old, and has a passion for the community in which he grew up. “I was born in Limpopo, but grew up in Witpoortjie. I was a learner at Princess Primary School and completed my high school years at Princess High School,” he said.

Sello is a quiet man, but he does not hold back when he writes. He explained, “My book is a collection of poems, and consists of a mix of my earlier works as well as some of my latest ones. To finish my collection took some time, as the writing process is not an easy one for me, because I touch on sensitive issues of the cultural and political kind.”

He added that his aim was to raise awareness about all of these issues, and in the process teach people about reality.

“Writing poetry is not just a hobby for me, it is a sort of activism,” he said with a shy smile.

His book – Country Bard Blues – was introduced at the Jozi Book Fair at Wits in September 2016. He said, “I went to Minuteman Press in Krugersdorp, and they printed copies of the book for me. The book has not been launched officially yet, as I do not have the financial means to have it professionally published.”

Sello’s aim is to inspire and encourage young writers to write poetry and he believes that, if more people have access to his book, he will be able to achieve that. “I would like to tell those who want to succeed at writing and publishing their own books, to stay focused and never give up. Even if you are not accepted at publishers, keep on trying,” he said.

Currently, Sello is the only person marketing the book, and he said with a smile, “I am selling my book for R85, and I believe it is quite affordable. I would like to encourage people to get this book, as I believe it is educational and a bit funny – all in all, a good read.”
