JMPD losing lives on the roads

The rate of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) killings and shootings has dramatically increased.

JMPD officers are losing their lives on the roads while trying to fight criminal activities.

“Two female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers died when a drunk driver drove into a roadblock on Monday, 29 January and in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 13 February, Officer Ratshikhopha was shot in the head while trying to intervene while a taxi driver was being hijacked in Booysens. The suspects got away and no arrests have been made.

The JMPD and the City has announced that a R100 000 reward is on the table for anyone who can assist with information that would lead to the suspects’ arrest. Anyone with more information can call 011 375 5911,” said Minnaar.

JMPD chief of police David Tembe tweeted as follows: “When I received a call at 3am yesterday that Officer Ratshikhopha is no more I was shattered. It pains me to lose the officers because of criminal acts. As I rendered my tribute to late Officer Ratshikhopha I asked myself a question, ‘As officers, do we belong to a lesser God?’ ”

The Record spoke to Superintendent Wandile Mrubata, to hear his views on the matter. He said, “These shootings are becoming worse every day. We pray on a daily basis not to become victims of these criminals. Officers are working in fear because most of these thugs want their guns so that they are able to commit criminal activities. I would like to plead with the community to help us find these criminals. When they see a crime taking place, do not keep quiet and walk away. Do something, call for help or take vehicle registration numbers.

“To help decrease crime against JMPD officers on the road, the law should enforce much heavier sentences on the offenders. Mostly it is foreigners committing these crimes and they are hard to catch because it’s not easy to run fingerprints on them and they move from city to city committing crimes,” he added.

Let’s stand together as the community of Roodepoort and fight crime. If you see something do something.
