Bleeding at my type writer

Better the devil you know, than the one you don’t?
Everyone was sitting glued to their TVs and computer screens this week, during the wee hours of Wednesday night and on Thursday. The reason? Of course the Zuma exit and Ramaphosa entrance. But, and you will most likely accuse me of cynicism, I could not help but sit back and wonder how long it will be before I tell everyone ‘I told you so’.
Do we have such short memories? Remember Marikana? Now suddenly everyone is fawning over the new president as if he is some political Messiah who will right all the ills of the country with a magic wand. Will a man who is worth $675 million and who pays R18 million for a buffalo really have insight into the poor and regular Joe’s plight?
This week, when a resident’s attempt to fix a pothole in Trezona Avenue led to the City actually fixing it, I was reminded of a similar scenario to the Cyril one. When the DA took over almost all the metros in 2016, I also curbed my enthusiasm. (By the way, I support no political party). And once again I was correct to do so. Well, sort off.
To date, very little has changed as far as I can see, except for what I call cosmetic politics. Random bursts of energy just to stave off the public, like the pothole incident. Everyone in the office thought it was an absolute miracle that Johannesburg Road Agency fixed the hole, but weren’t they supposed to do it? Is this how low our standards have dropped?
On the positive side, I often deal with civil servants who do their jobs with enthusiasm and integrity and have upstanding work ethics. And it’s not because of the political party they belong to. Let’s hope Mr Ramaphosa will not dash the hopes of our country and that he will bring real change we will all enjoy.
