‘It’s a dream that finally came true’
Lions donate playground equipment as part of their Legacy project
“Today is a dream that has finally come true after a lot of hard work from everyone,” said Roleen Hunter.
She is one of the Heads of Department (HOD) at Lantern School, and played an instrumental role in helping to realise one of the school’s biggest dreams. “I am a member of the Wilro Park Lions Club, and when we had to decide on a Legacy project, I immediately about thought about the school’s playground area, which was not in a great state. The Wilro Lions, in conjunction with the Mannheim Rosengarten Lions Club in Germany, decided to help with playground equipment and some maintenance,” she said.

According to Sandy van Heerden, the Public Relations Officer from the club, the Mannheim Rosengarten Club chose this project to get involved with, and together they ensured that the Foundation Phase learners were surprised with brand new playground equipment.
“The children were very excited during our official handover, and could not wait to play on the new equipment. The looks on their faces were all the reward we needed,” Sandy said, smiling.
The school’s principal, Timo Groenewald, could also not stop smiling as he watched the children playing, and he said, “We are very excited about this huge gift, it is really a dream that came true. We have battled a lot to get this done, and have tried numerous other things that just did not work out. We were very lucky to not only receive a sponsorship for the playground equipment, but for astro turf as well, resulting in a permanent playground without the normal wear-and-tear.”

He added that the equipment has a dual purpose, as it is not only used for playing, but the occupational therapists can use it as well. “We are very grateful for the Wiltro Lions’ support of our school, and want to thank them, as well as our other sponsors, for this lovely gesture,” he concluded.
