New home for Bobbies Rugby Club

Bobbies make Hoërskool Die Burger their new home

The Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) have officially started their 2018 season at their new home ground at Hoërskool Die Burger.

“The Bobbies have entered into a new venture with the school, not only to help grow our rugby, but to also assist the school in a number of ways to hopefully rebuild it to its former glory. The future for both the school and the club is looking prosperous,” said Jason du Toit, the club’s chairman.

He stated that there were many reasons for the move from their previous home ground, which was at Marks Park in Emmarentia. “The main reason that necessitated the move, was that we wanted to grow our U/19 and U/21 sides. Over the past years, we have struggled to grow our team numbers, having to compete with all the clubs around us. At Die Burger, we have a bigger feeder area for players and we are hoping that this will help us in our junior structures.

Together with this, we are also building on our senior teams, as the majority of these players are based in the surrounding area,” Jason said.

The club has been working hard to get the sport facilities at the school ready, and on 9 January the newly installed floodlights were officially switched on by the school’s principal. “This was a joyous occasion, because there were floodlights at the school for the first in more than 100 years. We have also started putting plans in place to give the community a facility where they are all welcome and where they can feel safe to enjoy their sport. In the future, we will be looking to add a netball section, cricket facilities as well as a place where they can play darts. The community can look forward to a soccer academy as well,” he said with a big smile.

Unfortunately, as is the case with most big plans, there are always financial constraints. Jason said, “We call on all the local businesses, or anyone else willing to assist, to please contact us as we have a number of ways donations and sponsorships can be made.”

He also thanked Continental Cables for donating the cabling required for the floodlights, a gesture that was appreciated by the school and all the club members.

The club has planned quite a few events for the next two months. “We have already started training for all players aged 17 and older, and will soon start training our junior players (children aged 17 and younger). Our first friendly game will be on 10 February at the Springs Rugby Day and our official open day, together with our first official home game, will be on 24 February,” Jason explained.

Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm and all players, aged 17 and older, are welcome to join them. For more information, contact Jason on 082 850 1344 or send an email to Jason.4d@gmail.com.
