Public pools issues resolved – MMC

‘To make up for the inconvenience, swimming season will be extended.’

“I wish to apologise to residents for the inconvenience caused by the closure of some of the public pools due to the shortage of chemicals.”

“Of the 55 pools in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), 20 had to be closed due to this shortage, leaving about 35 pools open to the public, which was regrettable,” said the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba.

The closure of the pools happened during the hottest period in Gauteng, and to make matters worse, the problems persisted throughout the holiday season. “On behalf of the CoJ and the current administration, I would like to assure the residents we have received the requisite stock for the cleaning of the pools. The pools will be treated and opened to the public within the next few days. This type of chemicals shortage will not be happening again,” she said.

She added that not all pool closures were due to the chemicals shortage and said, “Some pools were closed for other reasons, such as maintenance of filtration systems, electrical faults due to cable theft, electrical down-times, burst pipes, leakages, etc.”

Residents were assured that the CoJ realises the importance of public pools, and that they will work tirelessly to ensure the problem does not occur again.

“Normally, the CoJ swimming season is from 1 September to 31 March, but, to make up for the time residents lost during the pool closures, the swimming season will be extended until the end of April,” she said.

She concluded by thanking residents for their patience and understanding during this time.
