Post Office robbery unpacked by police

A case of business robbery is being probed at Honeydew Police Station following an armed robbery at a Post Office in Ruimsig on 18 January.

Captain Balan Muthan, spokesperson for the station, confirmed that the incident took place at Ruimsig Post Office in Ruimsig Boulevard Shopping Centre on Doreen Road at 12.40pm.

Describing the ordeal, Muthan said the Post Office was open, with about 12 clients inside when four suspects with firearms stormed the facility. “Four suspects with firearms entered the Post Office. One suspect held up the security guard while another stood by the door and watched everybody.”

“The two other suspects jumped over the counter and demanded cash from the tills and from the office,” Muthan explained.

He added that the suspects took the cash and ran out, to where a fifth suspect was waiting in a bronze-coloured Toyota Corolla. “The suspects then drove off. No one was injured, and no shots were fired. The Zulu-speaking suspects are unknown,” said Muthan.

A picture of the bronze Toyota was circulated on social media after it was captured on CCTV cameras before fleeing the scene.

The shopping centre is yet to comment on the matter.
