National Date Nut Bread Day
Enjoy a slice of this delicious bread on #NationalDateNutBreadDay
National Date Nut Bread Day is observed on 22 December, and according to some sources, also on 8 September.
Dates have been around since as early as 4 000 BCE (Before Current Era) and are believed to have originated near Iraq. They have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years, and in 1765 the Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California.
Dates are a good source of essential nutrients and are an excellent source of dietary potassium. The sugar content in a ripe date is about 80 per cent with the remainder consisting of protein, fibre and trace elements of boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.
Nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B2 and are also rich in protein, folate, fibre and essential minerals, including magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper and selenium.
Many studies have shown that those who consumed nuts on a regular basis, were less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease (CHD), and various clinical studies have found that consumption of almonds and walnuts can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations.
