Local boxer carries BRD name

'I want the new year to start with a bang'

“I would love to start the new year with a bang – both for me and my clients,” said Mitch Steyn.

Mitch, who recently obtained his professional licence, said that he wants to focus on sharing his love and knowledge for boxing through training. “I have been training here at the Hoërskool Florida gym for the past five months, and I absolutely love it!” he said.

He added that he is at the gym Monday to Saturday from 5am to 8pm. “I am available for training by appointment, making it more convenient for people who want to learn the art of boxing,” Mitch said.

Mitch said that everyone is welcome to come and train, it does not matter what age or gender you are. “I have found that women love boxing, as it teaches them self-defence and keeps them fit. I also want to use the training to help children who are being bullied, that is why I would encourage children (aged five and older) to join,” he said.

Mitch Steyn is ready to train boxers, both young and older.

“But, what can I expect when I start training?” you may ask, and the answer is simple. Mitch explains that he will start with the basics of boxing, and then work from there. “A lot of people come here and only do it for the fitness, but there are some who want to compete, and I offer them that opportunity as well,” said Mitch.

He said that he wanted to use the opportunity to teach young children the value of sport, and explained, “I am a recovering drug addict, who, after 12 years of addiction, decided to get my life back on track. I did not go to rehab, but used boxing to help me through. I believe training is the best rehab, and, coupled with a strong support system, you do not need medication.”

And, how do you convince people that boxing is the sporting code for them? He laughingly answered, “Every sport has its own benefits, and I believe the only way for someone to decide if they like the sport or not, is to try it. So, as soon as a prospective client visits the club, I give them a pair of gloves, take the focus pads, and let them experience the feeling of boxing.”
