Butterfly Brunch raises awareness

Fundraiser will become annual event

“Today was the first event of this type, and it will definitely become an annual event,” said Elvira Kortie.Elvira played an instrumental role in organising the Christmas Butterfly Brunch in aid of the Queen ButterflyFoundation. She explained the day’s event as follows: “We wanted to not only raise money for the Foundation, but also create awareness. There are a lot of people who have never heard of the Foundation and what it does.

Palesa Mofokeng (Principal and Founder of the Queen Butterfly Foundation) doing the Butterfly with Sipho Motloung.

”The Butterfly Foundation, a Non-profit Organisation (NPO), cares for children with profound mental and physical disabilities, and Elvira said that they wanted the people who have children with these types of disabilities to know there is a place to turn to.

“We wanted to reach out to parents who do not know where to go, as many places do not accept children with severe disabilities. Even at Gateway, there is a certain time the children can stay, but, here they can come every day, and receive love and care,” Elvira said.

Tannah Hartman, Connor Kortie and Kayla van Niekerk.

Palesa Mofokeng, the principal and founder of the Foundation was very excited about the day’s events, which consisted of a concert performed by the Foundation’s children. “The concert was titled Lost Little Lamb, and the story was read by Sipho Motloung, one of my learners whom I taught to read and write. We also had able-bodied children joining us, and Keryn Hartman wrote and recited a poem,” she said, smiling proudly.

Elvira added that the event was organised on very short notice, and they had between 60 and 70 people attending (including the children).

Elsa Mendonca Abreu and Susan van Niekerk.

“We have already set a date for next year’s event, which will take place in October, and we are hoping to triple the numbers. Every cent we receive, is used to keep the children and staff happy,” she said.

The Foundation is in need of sponsors who will be able to help with any of the following:

• Sponsoring of a child’s needs for the year,

• A staff member’s salary (for the year)

• Toiletries

• Stationery
