Kerstee at Maragon a huge, fun success

This occasion was hosted for the 11th year by the Afrikaans department and Grade 10 learners.

Learners from Maragon Ruimsig High School recently spoiled the seniors from a number of retirement homes when the school hosted its annual Kerstee (Christmas tea).

The event was aimed at embracing residents from homes for the aged, and resulted in about 100 senior citizens being catered for in terms of entertainment and prizes.

This occasion was hosted for the 11th year by the school’s Afrikaans department and Grade 10 learners. “We were privileged to entertain a group of approximately 100 senior citizens from the following homes – Roodepoort Sentrum vir Bejaardes, Floroma, Môreglans Ouetehuis, Luipaardsvlei and Residentia Moria,” said Natasha Joubert, the school’s marketing head.

She shared what went down at the event. “This year’s festive event was opened by Riaan Vorster, our new principal, who set the Christmas tone with a message from the Bible, after which he surprised and enthralled everyone present with his masterful solo piano and vocal rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

“The enthusiasm and dedication of the young hosts and hostesses was clearly visible in the preparation of delightfully decorated tables and their attention to and interaction with their appreciative guests.”

The event was filled with singing, poetry recital, carol singing and dramatic performances. Natasha added that the real success of the event was not due to the entertainment, scrumptious refreshments or generous gift bags, but “the mingling of people of different generations and exchange of stories between them guaranteed an event that will be remembered by all present. Having our own Maragon moms that care on board demonstrates the way in which Maragon Ruimsig High School reaches out to the community.”

She concluded by thanking all the roleplayers who made the event a success. “The Afrikaans department would like to extend its sincere appreciation to Wilropark Pick n Pay, Retail Crossing Superspar, Baby Boom and Eleana Liontarides who generously contributed to the gift bags that were handed out.”
