Don’t go on holiday until you’ve ticked off everything on this list
Inform security company and neighbours that you are going away.
The Police, security companies and other security practitioners often stress the fact that covering the basics might mean the difference between falling prey to crime or not.
The same goes for other dilemmas that might befall you. So before you leave your home for your holiday destination, make sure you have covered the following:
• Have your motor vehicle serviced before your long journey.
• Check that all the locks in your home are in good working order.
• Ensure that your electric fencing is clear of all grass, twigs, leaves and nearby trees.
• Lock your valuables away in a safe.
• Ensure that your pets will be taken care off while you are away.
• Cancel your newspaper deliveries for the festive season.
• Ensure that all your windows, doors and garages are locked.
• Disconnect all non-essential electrical appliances.
• Remove all perishable items from your fridge and put them in the freezer. Alternatively, give them to the needy.
• Lock away all garden furniture.
• Be sure to fit an anti-theft bracket on your gate motor and ensure your gate is secured so that it cannot be lifted.
• Notify your security company and neighbours that you will be going away.
• Ask a family member or friend to regularly pop in at your house to make sure everything is fine.
• Don’t forget to pay your bills before going away.
