Ward Committee members take a trip down memory lane

Recent heavy storms encouraged Ward 71's committee members to learn more about the history of Roodepoort.

“The recent heavy storms and tornado that swept through the West Rand, encouraged me to take my Ward Committee members on a trip down memory lane,” said René Benjamin.

The councillor for Ward 71 said that she realised that not many residents were aware of the tornado that caused a lot of damage in parts of Roodepoort in November 1948, and that is why she decided to arrange for a tour through the museum. “I wanted to help them gain a better understanding of the history of the ward in which they serve,” she said.

The Roodepoort Museum is situated at the Civic Centre in Florida, and went out of its way to host the team on a walk-through tour. “The tour guides did their best to make the tour interesting, and everyone was entertained by the stories of days gone by,” René said.

She added that she would like to encourage residents to visit the museum as it is definitely worth the effort. “At only R30 per adult and R20 per child, it is worthwhile to view the original artifacts, clothing and books, while learning more about history of Roodepoort and surrounding areas,” she said.

Since tours to the museum can only be done on an appointment basis, potential visitors are requested to call 011 761 0226 to make a booking.
