Rainy weather results in cancelled clean-up campaigns

Councillors thank everyone for their willingness to participate

The third installment of the A Re Sebetseng clean-up initiative, set to take place on 25 November, was foiled by Mother Nature.

According to the councillor for ward 84, Gert Niemand, the planned Discovery clean-up was raring to go, but with the cold and wet weather, they had no other choice than to cancel the day’s activities.

“Today’s clean up would have been quite a big one, with members from the Florida Block Watch, Emergency Management Services (EMS) Cadets, community members as well as some high school learners joining us.

But with the pouring rain and lightning, we decided to cancel, as the safety of our residents is more important,” he said.

He concluded by thanking everyone for their willingness to come out and participate. “Thank you to the community for their ongoing support during this initiative. Even though we could not complete today’s installment, there will be another one in the new year, of which details will be communicated,” Gert said.

The other clean-up that was set to take place, which was meant to take place in Davidsonville, was organised by the councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin. “Unfortunately we had to cancel the campaign, as the rain was quite heavy, and we would not have been able to do the physical clean-up work,” she said. She thanked everyone who came out to the Davidsonville Recreation Hall, ready to participate in the clean-up, despite the rain. “Thank you to everyone who was willing to come out today, your effort is much appreciated. I also want to extend my thanks to all the City of Johannesburg entities, community groups and my ward committee members who were also here today. Unfortunately, we do not have any control over the weather,” she said.

René urged the residents to be ready to participate in the next clean-up day. “I will communicate the details of our next campaign as soon as they become available,” said René.
