Athlete needs your help to break world record

Johan wants to raise funds while attempting to break world record

A well-known long-distance athlete needs the community’s help during his attempt to break a world record while raising money for charity.

Johan van Tonder will be attempting to break the 12-hour treadmill world record while also raising money for Sparrow Rainbow Village in Maraisburg. He broke a previous record in 2010, and two charities in Vanderbijlpark benefited from the event.

He said, “Sparrow Rainbow Village is a safe haven for children who have lost their parents to HIV. Some patients at the village are also abandoned by their own families, and are offered a place to die with dignity.”

The event will be taking place on 2 December at Hillfox Power Centre, on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter Road and Albert Street, Weltevreden Park from 4am to 4pm.

“My goal is to raise R500 000 for Sparrow, which should be enough for them to have the village repainted and to supply them with electronic appliances like kettles, microwave ovens and a lot of groceries,” said Johan.

But, he cannot do it on his own, and is appealing to community members as well as companies to get involved and help with the following:

• Two treadmills (just for the day) as well as one or two extra that will be available to the community members who would like to run with him

• Three sets of running clothes (the sponsor’s name will be displayed on the clothing)

• One set of clothing for his crew,

• Supplements, including carbo loaders, water, race food (sachets) and Bioplus sachets.

If there is anyone that can help with the above, as well as someone who can be the MC for the day, provide music and entertainment to the crowd, or any other companies wanting to get involved, contact Charlene on 072 375 4761 or Johan on 073 607 8864. An email can also be sent to dmin@weightmanagency.co.za.

The community’s help and assistance, as well as support for Johan, who will be running for 12 hours straight, will be greatly appreciated to help him make his dream come true and help Sparrow Rainbow Village.
