Complex residents unhappy about unwelcome ‘neighbours’

Also an illegal dumping hot spot.

Residents of the Wilro Gardens complex in Umgeni Street in Wilro Park are at their wits end with the unwillingness of the municipality to assist them.

In July this year, an alleged drunken driver crashed through the palisade fencing surrounding a piece of unused council land that borders on their complex. Ever since, all kinds of unwelcome characters have used the breach, on Ouklip Road, to access the property. They sleep right next to the wall that divides the complex from the council property, and leave rubbish all over. Some residents in the units closest to the wall have complained that they have had enough of the vagrants’ revelry over weekends. The biggest concern though is that there has been a spike in crime in the complex since their new ‘neighbours’ moved in.

Since July they have been trying to solve the problem via their councillor, ward committee and other stakeholders, but to no avail. They even offered to fix the palisades themselves, if the City was willing to reimburse them but apparently they are not interested. A man who sells wood nearby said he wanted to rent the property from the council to store his wood. He was willing to make the piece of land neat, look after it and fix the palisades. Regardless of all of the advantages of this for the council, which includes generating revenue, they again were not interested.

When the Record visited the property in question it was clear it was also becoming a hot spot for illegal dumping.
