Rising athlete off to a good start

Oluchi, a King’s School West Rand learner, is one of a couple of athletes in her club who have excelled this year.

Young athlete, Oluchi Olebuike (11) from the Accelerada Academy, a local athletics sports club, has leaped and sprinted to a successful year. Oluchi, a King’s School West Rand learner, is one of a couple of athletes in her club who have excelled in their respective athletics divisions this year.

This promising runner and long-jumper, who stands to represent South Africa in the Olympics when she is at a mature age, put on a great performance at three recent elite athletics sports tournaments.

In March, Oluchi was placed 8th in the national interprovincial primary school championships which were held in Potchefstroom.

This was followed by the Southern African Christian School’s Sports Association (SACCSA) championships which were held between 29 and 30 September in Sasolburg, where she scooped 1st position in the 100m and 150m sprints, the long-jump and the mixed relay event.

On 4 November, Oluchi was placed 3rd in the Central Gauteng Championships (CGA) for long-jump in the U/13 category.

Oluchi’s success has driven her club to scout for more talent in the area, consequently the academy will be conducting a talent identification event for all D12 athletes. “The main purpose of this event is to find deserving athletes, place them in a professional coaching system and groom them to achieve their goals of being champions in the near future,” said Mpumi Manyisi, the public relations manager.

The trials will be held at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium on 19 January 2018. For more information, contact Lucinda Terblanch, the office administrator, on 011 760 1081 or email info@ecceleradaacademy.co.za
