River racer masters the rapids
Paul gained an extensive understanding of rivers and rapids
A novice river racer from the Florida Lake Canoe Club participated in the recent Liebensbergvlei River race.
Paul Barnard said that he enjoyed his experience, and – despite a number of swims – managed to master the rapids quite successfully. “I gained an extensive new understanding of rapids and rivers in the process,” he said, smiling. He managed to finish the gruelling race in two hours and 56 minutes.
The Liebensbergvlei River race – hosted by the Bloemfontein-based Maluti Canoe Club in conjunction with the Germiston Victoria Lake Club – spans a distance of 31 kilometres, starting at Reitz in the Free State and finishing approximately 45 kilometres before Frankfort.
Jennie Dallas, the Gauteng Canoe Union Public Relations Officer said, “The race takes place over an exciting, clean stretch of water, with rolling wave trains, a few shootable weirs and some fun white-water.
And, while it is an enjoyable one, it is quite challenging for novices in their first months of river racing.”
