The community liaison officer, Erasmus Babedi, told Northsider that they were contracted to change a bent pole when they dug and discovered the bones.
“We saw the bones during our digging and we thought it was human remains,” said Babedi, who swiftly informed the police about his findings.
He added that they had to stop digging until the arrival of police, since they did not want to interfere with the investigation.
The Roodepoort K9 Search and Rescue Unit attended the scene to confirm whether they had found human or animal bones. “We took a sample and sent it to our [lab], and they confirmed it was an animal,” said Sergeant Reinier Henning from the K9 Unit.

He added that they had dug deeper and discovered ‘mysterious’ animal bones from many years ago. He also mentioned that they found a projectile lodged in the skull. Other findings included teeth.
Since the bones were brittle, Henning suspected the unknown animal was killed about 40 years ago. “Some farmer was probably very cross with the animal long ago,” Henning speculated. He concluded by saying that the bones will be taken to the national museum for identification.
