Lions Club helps the unemployed to see

The Lions Club International and the Horizon Methodist Church have paired together to provide eye tests and lunch for the disadvantaged and unemployed.

The Lions Club International and the Horison Methodist Church joined forces and provided eye tests and lunch for the disadvantaged and unemployed.

The initiative, run by the Lions Eye Clinic, was set up to help people receive free eye tests and obtain glasses. Once their eye tests were completed, everyone was given a free sandwich and tea, as well as a 1kg packet of maize meal and a can of pilchards to take home.

Lions Club member Lillian McClarty said the club has been operating in the Roodepoort area for close to 20 years.

“We have been around for quite a while and people come to our offices to do their eye tests and receive their new glasses.

Our aim today is to just get as many people tested as possible and then we send them to a local optometrist to sort out their prescription. They usually return to us to pick out a frame then we send them back to get the frames filled. We have branched out to other areas in Johannesburg to give free eye tests and now we are predominantly here and running this program from the church. We usually give them a free meal and they take home a food pack as well.”

Club President John Leaman said they have held a number of eye testing campaigns and have no intention of slowing down.

“We used to go to schools but the church reached out to us, stating they really need help with glasses as many people have complained about not getting any work because their vision is bad. We are always happy to help and this is our third eye test campaign this year. Our next campaign will be eye tests for people who have diabetes at the Horison Shopping Centre on 4 November.”
