Local security protect cash-in-transit vehicle during breakdown
Mphilo from EC Security said they waited until a tow-truck arrived to tow the cash vehicle away.
A cash-in-transit heist just waiting to happen was prevented by several local security companies after a cash-in-transit vehicle broke down on the corner of JG Strydom Road and Tamarisk Avenue in Weltevreden Park on 31 October.
Norman Mphilo, the reaction manager at EC Security told Northsider he passed the cash vehicle twice and realised that they needed backup after noticing one guard patrolling around the vehicle.

“They were driving then the cash van broke down. I realised that it’s not safe for the cash van to stand with one guard without more backing, as this would create an easy opportunity for criminals to take a chance and rob them,” said Mphilo, who called on a range of security companies to protect the cash vehicle.

Cash-in-transit heists in the country have increased alarmingly, with cash-in-transit vehicles seemingly targeted on a regular basis.
Cash guards have been under increasing pressure in the past few months following brazen attacks by robbers who use explosive devices and high calibre firearms to perpetrate the crime. With the Festive Season approaching, the guards now need to be on extra-high alert.
Videos and photos of heists have been shared on social media to create awareness. The two most recent videos, both of which went viral, were those of cash vehicle driver using the vehicle as a weapon following a heist at a service station, and of a security guard who returned fire after a bullet just missed him while money was being loaded into an ATM.
