National Hermit Day

Take the opportunity today to put aside some time for you to be alone, as 29 October is National Hermit Day.

It is a day to retreat to someplace quiet and just get away from the everyday hustle and bustle.

A hermit is a person who lives – to some degree or other – in seclusion from society. The word hermit comes from the Latin word eremita, which means ‘from the desert’.

Saint Colman, an Irish monk who died in Ireland in 632 AD (allegedly on the equivalent of the modern 29 October) lived as a hermit in the Burren Forest, in a cave, for seven years, and this is believed to be the reason this day was chosen to celebrate National Hermit Day.

Celebrate today by turning off your phone and computer, finding a secluded place to go to and just forget about your worries. Use the time to rest and relax by enjoying some quiet time, reading, writing or drawing. You can also take a well-deserved nap.
