Welcome assistance for children’s home

Highveld Stereo FM 94.7 and Spur sponsored a soccer field and vegetable garden at St Lawrence’s Children’s Haven.

St Laurence’s Children’s Haven now has a soccer field and a vegetable garden, thanks to a sponsorship by Highveld Stereo FM 94.7 and Spur.

The Johannesburg radio station and the restaurant chain partnered to improve the facilities at the children’s home. They added a soccer field, soccer nets and a vegetable garden to their grounds. There home provides a place of safety for abused and abandoned children between 10 months and 18 years old.

Caregiver Abigail Branders explained the structure of the organisation.

“We look after 28 to 35 children at any given time – usually 28 on a full-time basis. Last year we provided care for a total of 63 children. Some children stay with us for a short period while others have been with us for over 10 years. They receive three cooked meals a day, a bath or shower daily, attend local schools and are supervised by trained house parents who are approved by Child and Family Welfare. For many of the children, this is their first time experiencing love and care in a secure and warm environment. Under these conditions the pain and trauma they have suffered pass and they adapt to become young, healthy, caring and balanced children.

Caregiver Tilly Malan explained how Spur and Highveld Stereo FM 94.7 became involved.

“A kind lady by the name of Nicole Swanepoel nominated our home to the radio station as they were looking for homes to help, and we were selected. More than 100 people were here yesterday and there was a live crossing with radio hosts Greg Aldridge and Lucky du Plessis.

A vegetable garden in the making.

Everyone came to interact with the kids and donate food and toys for them. We are so grateful for the help and coverage the Haven received.”

With the festive season approaching, the home welcomes all donations in the form of money, long-life milk, nappies, toilet paper and second-hand clothing – from baby to adult sizes.

The bricks are being delivered.
