28 October is National Animation Day, a day created to remind us all that we should sometimes make time to relive our childhood memories.
Most of us were raised on animated cartoon movies, with our Saturday morning routine consisting of a sugary bowl of cereal and some morning cartoons. Our view of the world has often been shaped by this amazing art form – from old school cartoons through to our favourite video games and movies of today.
Animation is the art of creating an illusion of movement through a series of images that each show a separate stage of the animation which is then displayed at a set rate through a projector. Original animation was known as cell-animation or hand-drawn animation – and it was literally drawn, frame by frame, to form the animated characters we have come to love and enjoy.
Many modern animations are done via Computer Generated Imagery (CGI ) which emulates hand-drawn animation, while others are done on the computer. But, no matter which type of animation is used, all styles of this art form have their own appeal and many fans have expressed their support for one or the other as the ultimate animation form.
Animation has been used in everything from short commercials to full-length feature films, thus serving as a method of delivering entertainment and information through an accessible medium.
The International Film Association was originally established in France. Its purpose was to recognise all forms of cinema and art – among them animation. To serve as a pinnacle event in the celebration of the rising art of animation, they developed International Animation Day in 2002.
To celebrate today, get your friends and family together, pick up a series of movies ranging from the original Disney Mickey Mouse cartoons all the way through to the modern show, Avatar, which showcases the blending of new and traditional filming. Use this day to explore the great wide world of animation. Try something new and relive the old adventures.
