Cake deco techniques wow audience
The event wooed many cake lovers and aspiring cake decorators.
Cake enthusiasts were blown away by amazing skills of local cake decorators who showed off their art during a cake demonstration day on 21 October.
The event wooed many cake lovers and aspiring decorators at St. Michaels and All Angels Church in Weltevreden Park.

The event was hosted by the South African Cake Decorators Guild, Florida Branch. The organisation is non-profitable and aims to promote the growth of the cake decorating community by hosting shows and demonstrations nationwide.
The attendees were treated to a variety of cakes and stalls around the premises as they congregated for decoration sessions from the cake experts at the church hall. The decorators included Maxie Van Niekerk who specialises with figurines, Fiona Maclean with blushing bride flower, Sued Reid with Columbine flower, Danele Botes with covering cakes and Elna De Waal with stained glass.
Maclean, who has been a decorator for about 10 years, shared her secret of what makes a decorator outstanding. “A general idea of colour, a slight amount art and love for cake and decorating,” she said
“This is an expression of your own creativity, and you need to have something inside you,” she added.
Although it is difficult make a career out of cake decorating, Maclean said this is an easy tool to make extra cash. She advised enthusiasts to approach the guild for decorating classes instead of learning from YouTube.
The organisation’s chairperson Huda Daniels commented on the impressive turnout. “The turnout was very good. We had about 150 people and we also had a couple of walk-ins during the event.”
Daniels added that the fun of decorating also go as far as entering competitions such as the Johannesburg Food and Wine Show which includes a cakes show during the event.
