Lively badminton at Rec Centre
The Esmeralda Badminton Club invites all experienced retirees to join them.
The Esmeralda Badminton Club is alive and well, and inviting all experienced retirees to join the prestigious club.
The club, based at the Witpoortjie Recreational Centre, has been playing the sport for over 30 years and has a huge pride in and passion for the activity. With eight full members playing each other, the club has made badminton a fun activity, especially for retired individuals who are looking to keep active and healthy.

Club Treasurer, Sarie Webster, explained the club’s structure and its badminton schedules.
“We are a non-profit organisation. Some of our members have been playing since 1980. We used to play competitively in the Housewife’s League and played against other clubs all over Gauteng. As time went on, members moved away or got jobs, so the team grew smaller. Currently, we only have retired players in the club and our practices are from 9am to 10:30am on Tuesdays.”
“Honestly, we do want experienced players, because some of our games are fast-paced, but we are willing to teach people how to play until they are ready to set foot on the court,” said Sarie.
Sarie said the club has a long history, and is involved in a number of charities.
“I have been the treasurer of the club since 1986, and I am only the second or third treasurer since the club’s inception. Our youngest player is 61 years old, while our oldest player is 72, so most of our members are over the age of 60. Each year we host a Winter’s Christmas Party in July where we collect donations and give all the proceeds to Cansa.”
